NIAGARA ACHA COMMITS FOUR LOCALS

Niagara University ACHA Hockey is happy to announce the commitment of four more players for the 2017-2018 season.

Kyle Clifford (D)

Buffalo Regals 18U/GOJHL, St. Joe’s Varsity Fed

Buffalo, NY

Thoughts from Recruiter Nate Miller:

Kyle is an outstanding performer every time he hits the ice. He’s a solid defenseman, reads the angles very well, and will literally jump through a wall for the team. He plays with a grit necessary on the back end, and was instrumental in making St Joe’s the team to beat in the Fed. Additionally, he was an integral part of an impressive Regals 18U team that made it to the State final. He has hockey pedigree for sure, and he always makes it look easy. We’re excited to have him add some depth to the D core.

Colin Farrell (F)

Thorold Blackhawks (GOJHL)

Tonawanda, NY

Thoughts from Recruiter Nate Miller:

Colin is a player who has competed at a very high level of junior hockey, logging time with the Jr. Sabres (OJHL) as well as Fort Erie and Thorold of the GOJHL. He is a pest (in the best kind of way) on the ice, plays an extremely physical game, and creates opportunities for himself and others every single shift. He has a reputation as a grinder, and he will absolutely battle for the puck in every situation. We look forward to Colin’s versatility as an addition to the team.

Jay Oldacre (F/D)

St. Francis Prep (MPHL)

Cheektowaga, NY

Thoughts from Recruiter Nate Miller: Jay is another utility player like Pash Kovtunov who plays both positions extremely well. The first time I watched Jay was as a junior in high school, and he was playing D. I was extremely impressed with his ability to see the game and make the first pass, as well as jump into the rush. A year later, Larry and I both saw Jay play independently of each other, and both picked Jay off the roster. As a forward, Jay is constantly moving his feet, not only with the puck, but in anticipation of where the puck will go. He very rarely makes mistakes, and he’s someone who surprises opponents with his speed and stickhandling ability. We are extremely excited to see Jay carve out a niche for himself here at NU, as well as continue his sister Amanda’s Niagara legacy!

Daniel Smolka (D)

Amherst 18U/North Tonawanda HS Fed

North Tonawanda, NY

Thoughts from Recruiter Nate Miller:

I haven’t known Dan for long, but he’s another player who obviously had some hockey pedigree. Almost instantly he impressed me with his skating ability. As defensemen at the high school level, a lot of the more skilled guys are hopping up in the rush every time. Smolka knows exactly when is the right time, and seems to identify where his teammates are on the ice at all times. He is a tough competitor, and is completely honest when it comes to the strengths and weaknesses of his game. It’s clear he respects the game and his role in it, and we’re thrilled to have such a strong addition to the defensemen.

These four commitments bring Niagara’s total up to 7 for next year! We would like to welcome the players and their parents into the Niagara University ACHA Hockey family, and we look forward to next season. Stay tuned with updates on commitments and next season.
